Why can't I send more messages?
If the website stops you from sending a message, one of three temporary protections may be the reason. All of them exist to reduce spam and give members room to respond, and all of them lift on their own.
You reached the new conversation limit
This protection only affects starting conversations with additional people. Once someone replies to you, that conversation counts as an existing one, and messaging them does not use up your allowance.
Here is what to expect:
- The limit resets automatically within 24 hours.
- Newer accounts start with a lower allowance, and it increases as your account gets older.
- When you are close to the limit, a yellow warning appears below the message controls. It shows how many more new conversations you can start.
You were asked to wait for a response
This can happen if you send several messages to the same member without getting a reply. Give them time to answer before messaging again.
- A reply from them clears the restriction.
- If they do not reply, the restriction expires automatically.
The member you contacted is temporarily protected
Sometimes a very new member who does not have a Pro account receives an unusually high amount of interest in a short time. When that happens, we temporarily limit who can start a conversation with them.
During this period, the member can still receive messages from their friends, their existing contacts, and people who are nearby. If you are not in one of those groups and try to message them for the first time, you will see:
This member is currently receiving a lot of messages. To make things a little more comfortable for them, we are temporarily only allowing messages from those who are nearby. You can try contacting them again in the future.
This protection belongs to the recipient's account. It does not mean they have blocked you or that you have used up your own messaging allowance. You can try reaching out again later.
